I’m not someone who tries out a whole lot of makeup. My daily look uses well under 10 products (I think…) and since I rarely hit pan on eyeshadows, I’ve imposed a palette purchasing ban on myself for the foreseeable future. That said, I did manage to round up a few of my absolute favourite beauty products which I tried for the first time in 2017, and thought I’d share them with you today.
Although I’ve been wearing heavier makeup less regularly for a while now, I couldn’t resist picking up e.l.f.’s Flawless Finish Foundation SPF15 in Sand when their partnership with Superdrug was unveiled back in May of last year. At £7.50 it is truly unbeatable in terms of value for money – the product itself is as good as any drugstore brand’s foundation I’ve ever tried. To be honest, I even prefer it to my high end favourites by the likes of Illamasqua and the now ex-communicated Nars. Sure, it smells ever so slightly of paint stripper but it provides long lasting, full coverage and works beautifully with all my other products.
Back in 2017 when I could be arsed to contour for a day in the office, I got very into Makeup Geek’s Contour Powder Pan in Infidelity, and can confirm that it’s still a firm favourite. Providing a subtle but buildable cool-toned contour, this was my first time trying anything from Makeup Geek, and I was pleasantly surprised indeed. On days when I want to add a little extra structure to my look, I’ll apply Infidelity along my cheekbones and nose with a slanted brush, blending in to perfection.
One of my other top discoveries of last year in terms of beauty was another Makeup Geek find – their Plush Lip Matte in Misfit. I adore the witchy, greigy tone of the lipstick, and found the formula very wearable and relatively long-lasting. Alongside my all-time number one, Dose of Colours’ Desert Suede, Misfit was my favourite lipstick to wear last year and one I reached for on several occasions.
The last product I want to mention was a Black Friday purchase which I am so glad I made the plunge on – it’s Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Dipbrow Pomade in Ash Brown. Having earned my brow wings using e.l.f.’s budget- and beginner-friendly eyebrow kit, I was ready to move onto something more challenging and had been wanting to try this beloved product for a while. It’s certainly powerful – one wrong move and I end up looking like a Picasso cast-off. With an angled brush and a very light hand, I simply draw a line under my brow, brush the line upwards to fill in the eyebrow without taking more product, then draw another line on the top of the brow, starting around mid-way through.
As I mentioned in my skincare roundup, I want to try and make my way through my current makeup collection before buying more products. It’ll be fun reaching for old favourites and underrated classics. I may even document it on the way! What were your favourite beauty finds of 2017?
