As much as I love using gorgeous cruelty-free skincare (not to mention writing about it for this blog), a lot of my routine is functional. From my morning cleanse to taking my makeup off at the end of the day, every step has its own function. While that consistency has its charm, it’s nice to indulge in effective skincare for the pure enjoyment of it now and again – for pleasure over business, if you will.

For me, face masks signify the kind of luxurious skincare ritual that I am talking about. It’s great if your favourite mask benefits your skin, but for the most part you just want to enjoy the experience of using it. Using a face mask is something that I have always associated with relaxation, comfort and, ultimately, self-love: it takes a little more effort to apply and remove than your usual products, requires spare time and limited movement, and is a sort of failsafe way to add a little magic and self-care to your day.
When I first discovered ethical bath, body and skincare company, Bloomtown, I was drawn in by their beautiful branding. Their eco-friendly packaging carries their ethos across their own range; they’re “inspired by the woods, gardens, groves, and other charming nooks of our ideal green community, where every ingredient is nourishing and sustainable,” and this is reflected in their commitment to natural, cruelty-free options. While they are not a strictly vegan company (some of their products feature organic beeswax), they do not test on animals and their range is free from palm oil and several other frequently avoided ingredients.
I picked up The Clearing, their Black Clay and Tea Tree treatment mask. Intended for oily and acne-prone complexions, I was initially unsure what it would do for my blemished, combination skin; I contend with persistent hormonal breakouts on my chin as well as some minor scarring and redness here and there, so I was intrigued to see if I’d notice a difference after a month or so of regular use.
The Clearing features detoxifying kaolin clay as one of its handful of ingredients, along with antibacterial tea tree oil – a potent oil reducing, spot-fighting team. Due to its plant-derived glycerine base, this face mask doesn’t dry out and leave skin feeling raw after use, and can be used daily if preferred. It smells completely divine – notes of citrus, tea tree and, if you pay close attention, coconut, stand out – and warms as it is applied, for a totally indulgent experience. White willow bark extract provides the skin with a gentle exfoliation, clearing out any clogged pores and leaving your face bright and smooth.
It wasn’t until I started to use Bloomtown’s award-winning mask every day (or, at least, once every two days) that I began to truly notice its effect. After a short period of everyday use, my skin was clearer, with a visible reduction in the redness and blemishes on my chin. Now, the act of applying, wearing and removing this mask has become a cherished part of my daily routine; I look forward to it greatly, and even found myself yearning for it when I was away recently. Who knew you could miss a face mask? When it’s one this good, I understand why.
If it wasn’t already obvious, I’m completely enamoured by Bloomtown’s range. I have also been using (and very much enjoying) their Nourishing Body & Bath Oil, but I’m going to talk more about that in another post, so stay tuned! While this post does not include affiliate links, I do have a 20% off discount code you can use should you wish to make an order with Bloomtown, which would earn me a small commission, too.
