Exfoliating is one aspect of my skincare routine that I really feel the benefits of. There’s nothing like giving your skin a good scrub to make it feel deeply cleansed and revitalised. Call it a placebo effect, but I usually need quite an abrasive product to make me feel like it’s really worked so, when I was approached to try something out from Botanicals, and spotted their Gentle Face Polish*, I was certainly intrigued.
Botanicals is a natural skincare brand offering a range of products for the face and body, as well as for the bath, all of which are vegan-friendly and made up of mostly organic ingredients. Although you could hardly call my makeup routine green, I am increasingly being drawn to natural skincare; seeing an expiry date printed on environmentally conscious packaging reassures me that neither the product nor its container will last longer than they need to.
The Gentle Face Polish (labelled as Cleanse & Polish in the product I received – I suspect they may have had to rename it due to a clash with a well-known brand’s best seller) is intended for normal, sensitive and combination skin, which perfectly describes my own. Through these winter months, punctuated as they’ve been with blasts of unseasonal heat, my skin has been a little up and down: blotchy, dull and dry with the usual hormonal breakout.
I’ve been reaching for Botanicals’ gentle exfoliator around once a week, as recommended, and must say it’s a joy to use. Its balmy texture melts away between your fingertips and spreads smoothly onto the skin. Gentle is something of an understatement; it feels almost as if I am applying a moisturiser, the exfoliants – dried rosehip and oatmeal – are so unobtrusive. I do notice (I suspect, on account of the rosehip, but am not entirely sure) my skin immediately deepens in colour to a mildly alarming red, but this soon clears up as I wash away the product with a warm, damp muslin cloth.
One of the things I love most about natural cosmetics is the richness of their scents, and this is certainly the case with Botanicals’ Gentle Face Polish. The smell of the chamomile is unmistakable, and it provides calm and comfort.
If you’re after an exfoliating cleanser which feels substantially more like a cleanser than an exfoliant, then you’d likely get along with this one. The part of me who feels certain she can scrub away all of her skin insecurities and imperfections is not quite ready to give up more abrasive products just yet, but I may well be won over one day. In the meantime, I’m sure I’ll play host to more natural, organic products from Botanicals’ range, perhaps starting with one of their fabulous-sounding face masks.
Do you prefer a harsher exfoliant like me, or would you get on with a gentler version? Have you tried anything from Botanicals? Do let me know below.
