Does anyone else sort of flop into the new year, having lazed around forgetting their place in the world on those weird in-between days at the end of December? Well, that’s kind of how it usually goes for me, and this New Year’s Eve was no exception. I’ve left the house a handful of times since Christmas, and have mostly been taking it (very) easy on the sofa, which has been both nice and necessary. Now that 2017 has begun in earnest, I’m starting to feel more motivated, and have put together my New Moon Intentions for the year, which I’m sharing with you today.
Although I didn’t write these goals up until the 2nd January (naughty moon girl), I realise that in retrospect I’ve been working away at them since the New Moon on December 29th. Guided by Capricorn*, I’ve been doing a lot of meticulous planning. I redesigned my blog, started taking a greater interest in my bullet journal, and have been setting out some pretty lofty writing resolutions for the year ahead (being ambitious is another Capricorn strength).
*I like to keep track of which sign a New Moon is in, as it adds some extra insight on what to focus on that month. I use Yasmin Boland’s Moonology book for this.
Last year in January, I set out some thoughts on how I wanted the year ahead to feel. This approach felt more natural to me than writing up a list of more specific goals, and coincidentally lined up nicely with this guide to setting intentions for the year, so I thought I’d do it again for 2017.
So, without further ado, this year I would like to feel…
In December, one of my intentions was to get behind more causes I believe in. In 2017, I want to support kickstarters for creative projects I’d love to see come to fruition, donate to crowdfunding drives to help fund exciting ideas, and generally be a brick in the wall of the future I want to see (ooh, metaphors..deep). I truly believe that we have the power to create a future we need and believe in by investing even the smallest amount of money in creatives and innovators that mean something to us and who are working towards a bigger and brighter world.
With being conscious as an aim, I also want to be a better ally and fight injustice in a more effective way. Lastly, I want to work harder on identifying and minimising the impact I have on the planet, by taking steps towards a zero waste lifestyle, for example (more on that soon!).
This might sound like a pretty out-there intention for the year, and to be honest it kind of is. I don’t mean to hope that I’ll suddenly stop being afraid of everything that scares me, or win my battle with anxiety. More than anything, I want to focus on working hard to accept that change (the prospect of which terrifies me) is an inevitable, and often positive, part of life. I want to work hard to live my life the way I want to, without my fears and anxieties constantly taking over. Ultimately, I need to keep believing that I am stronger than my fears, and have the power to overcome them.
In 2016, I focused on being productive as one of my new year’s resolutions. And I was – I maintained and improved my blog and social presence (making lots of friends along the way), and grew closer with my wonderful writing group, who provide me with the inspiration I need to keep writing. I end the year proud of my achievements, but hungry for more. So, in 2017, I want to truly invest time and energy into my writing goals for the year which include submitting and publishing work, and completing at least one writing project. I want to keep on top of deadlines and submission opportunities, giving myself the push I need to get.shit.done. Aside from writing, I want to focus on investing in my future goals, mainly by spending more wisely and saving as much money as possible where I can.
So there we are – my New Moon Intentions for 2017. Do you think I’m aiming too high, or is a healthy dose of ambition what it’s all about? Let me know what you hope to achieve this year in the comments below.
